San Diego Unified School District's Regional Occupational Program (ROP) provides high school students (with priority enrollment given to those ages sixteen to eighteen in grades eleven and twelve) with skills necessary to succeed in post-secondary education, entry-level employment and/or career advancement. The Regional Occupational Program served over 11,000 students in the 2007-2008 school year in standards based courses that span the fifteen industry sectors identified as the growth industries of the future in the state of California. Taught by instructors with a minimum of five years industry experience, Regional Occupational Program courses are fully-integrated into comprehensive, small career-themed and charter high schools and in career academy programs. Students enrolled in Regional Occupational Program courses have the opportunity to participate in classroom based instruction as well as a paid or unpaid internship in a business setting related to the course of study. All Regional Occupational Program curricula are reviewed annually by business advisory committees to ensure that courses are relevant, rigorous and meet labor market needs. Twenty nine Regional Occupational Program courses are articulated with the San Diego Community College District allowing students who earn a grade of B or better the opportunity to earn both high school and community college credit.
