PURPOSE
When California voters passed Proposition 1d in November of 2006, $500,000,000 in funding was designated for the purpose of improving Career Technical Education (CTE) facilities. Specifically, the measure allows for eligible school districts to apply for funding of new construction, remodeling/reconfiguration and/or equipment for established and emerging CTE programs. To be considered for funding school districts are required to submit a grant applications during a specified period of time know as an application round. Each round calls for a significant planning effort to be made by schools and districts to address all the necessary components identified in the specific rounds grant application.
SDUSD and Proposition S
Proposition 1d requires that local school districts provide at least fifty percent matching funds for approved grant submission. For remodels, including equipment, grants were awarded up to $3,000,000, with $1,500,000 provided by the state and $1,500,000, and any additional overages, being provided by the local school district. For new construction, grants are awarded for up to $6,000,000, with $3,000,000 provided by the state and $3,000,000, and any additional overages, being provided by the local school district.
Approved Proposition 1d projects from Round 1, seven facilities development projects, and Round 2, eight additional facilities development projects, receive their matching funds through San Diego Unified School District's Proposition S. Proposition S was passed by voters of the City of San Diego in November 2008 and provides 2.1 billion dollars in facility improvements and modernization for the schools of the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD). CCTE and Facilities Development
In the spring of 2007, the Office of College, Career and Technical Education (CCTE) of the San Diego Unified School District, spearheaded the district's effort to secure Proposition 1d funding to develop Career Technical Education (CTE) facilities. To date, Proposition 1d has held two rounds, with a third round being planned. During rounds one and two, CCTE has had 15 of 16 grants awarded. These awards have equated to nearly 24 million dollars in state funding for over 48 million dollars for CTE facilities development.
