Hire-a-Youth 2009
This spring San Diego Unified was privileged to receive a 1.5 million dollar grant for the Summer 2009 Hire-a-Youth Program. Funded by the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act through the San Diego Workforce Partnership, the program places 600 students in paid summer internships. To date, the Hire-a-Youth team has logged in more than 4,000 staff hours, reviewed 1,300 student applications, delivered more than 6,000 work readiness training hours to students and recruited more than 100 businesses. 608 students have successfully been placed into six-week summer internships, June 22-July 31. The program will culminate in a final celebration on July 31 for students and their employers, hosted by the USS Midway Museum.
Employers involved in the program include many non-profit organizations, private corporations, educational institutions, government agencies and small businesses. Major supporters hosting multiple students at their sites include the Jackie Robinson YMCA, Boys & Girls Clubs, Manpower, QUALCOMM, University of California San Diego, San Diego State University,San Diego City and County agencies and San Diego Unified School District.
Internship hosts provide strong mentorships and quality experiences for our students to explore the world of work. Each student has the opportunity to earn at least $1,200 for the summer and to build their employability skills and resumes. Employers, staff and students have begun to share terrific stories about their experiences. Read more and stay tuned for more updates this summer.
